    Chiang Mai

    Trekking can also be enjoyed by tourists while in Chiang Mai. In the mountain of Doi Suthep, there is even a non-partisan group which organizes weekly hiking for tourists. Zip line is also an activity to be enjoyed in the province.

    As for the night life, there are bars and restaurants in Chiang Mai, but it is not as extensive like in other cities. There is also a night bazaar to satisfy the craving hearts of shopaholics.

    Chiang Mai is also a place of festivals. The most famous is the Loi Kratong. It is the festival wherein Lanna-style sky lanterns, or hot air balloons made out of paper, are released to the air. Seeing the night sky be lightened up is a sure breathtaking feat.

    Landmarks

    * Thaphae Gate

    The Thaphae Gate can be found at Moon Muang Road in Chiang Mai. It is one of the most significant historic landmarks within the city. The Tha Pae Gate is one of the main gateways into the Old City district. In total there are five main city gates, of which the Tha Pae Gate is the most important and dates back to the latter part of the 13th century.

    * Three Kings Monument

    The Three Kings Monument stands at the center of the walled city, in honour of the three kings who worked together to lay out the city of Chiang Mai -- King Mengrai, the founder of Chiang Mai; his contemporary and reportedly good friend King Ramkamhaeng of Sukothai; and King Ngam Muang of Payao. It is situated in front of the old Provincial Hall building, which is currently occupied by the City Art & Cultural Center.

    Shopping Area / Shopping Centre

    * Airport Plaza

    Airport Plaza is located on the corner of Mahidol and Hang Dong Road close to Chiang Mai airport. It features a complete western style shopping experience, selling a wide variety of goods including cosmetics, clothing, shoes, household goods, appliances and northern craft products. There are also several dining options in Airport Plaza such as Sizzler Steakhouse, Fuji and Zen Japanese Restaurants and ice cream parlours.

    * Kad Suan Kaew Shopping Mall

    Kad Suan Kaew Shopping Mall is one of the biggest hence most popular shopping malls in Chiang Mai which is located at Huay Kaew Road. It houses a department store, supermarket, food court, restaurants and cinema. Central Department Store is at the heart of the centre offering a wide range of products for all shoppers’ needs. Kad Suan Kaew also plays host to Chiang Mai's only branch of British retailer Marks and Spencer.

    Markets

    * Chiang Mai Night Bazaar

    Chiang Mai Night Bazaar is located in the heart of the city, on the Chan Klan road, between Tha Pae and Sri Donchai roads. It is famous for its handicrafts and portrait paintings. There are also jewellery, toys, clothing and high tech items such as, CDs and DVDs. It is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Chiang Mai. At first, the market was owned by Chinese merchants, but since it grew in size as more commercial buildings were built, more Thais have ventured into the business.

    * Walking Street Market

    Walking Street Market starts at Tha Pae Gate and runs along the length of Ratchadamnoen Road through the heart of the Old City. It is also known as the Weekend or Sunday market and is a real showcase of the art and craftsmanship of Northern Thailand. Many of the stallholders have personally made the items they sell and the many hand crafted objects are a testimony to the skills and inventiveness of local people.The goods available are made from wood, metals, ceramics, fabrics, paper, coconuts and they are truly authentic and original. Any item that is not marked with a fixed price is open for negotiation and is all part of the fun.

    Places of worship

    * Wat Phra Singh

    Situated at the very end of Ratchadamnoen Road, the Wat Phra Singh temple lies in the heart of Chiang Mai. It was built during the 1300s, much of the structure itself has since been restored, although it still retains its original character. It is considered as one of the city's most important historic temples and has become known for its maroon interior and its 15th-century Phra Singh Buddha

    * Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep

    Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep is located along Huay Keaw Road. Constructed during the latter part of the 14th century and located on the very outskirts of Chiang Mai, the Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep temple enjoys an elevated setting. The temple's breathtaking golden spire is hard to miss and tourists enjoy visiting this site for the breathtaking cityscape views.

    Archer's Café is set in the heart of the Old City, between Ratwithi and Ratchadamnoen. It offers Chiang Mai's best English breakfast and also a killer roast beef Sunday lunch as well. There is also a range of well-priced yet delicious international and Thai dishes as well as beers and spirits.

    * Khun Nai Dern Sai

    Situated in Nimminhemin Road, Chiang Mai, Khun Nai Dern Sai is roughly translated as ‘the lady wakes late’. This is the place to head for an unusual Thai menu, along with cute décor, perfect background music and a nice ambience that attracts bohemian trendies. Dining here won’t be complete without having a dish of “Roasted Pork”. Other popular dishes include Fried Fish in herb, Pla Taptim Mee Kik, Tom Yam Bai Ma Kam. For vegetarians, there are Tom Sab Kan Hed and Kua Nga.

    MRT & Transport

    * Arcade Bus Station

    Arcade buses station is located on the eastern end of Kaew Nawarat Road near the super highway intersection. The bus trip from Chiangmai to Bangkok takes about 9 hours. Most bus companies provide transfer services to and from the arcade. The majority buses companies are located in the anusarn market and Saeng Tawn Cinema areas.

    * Chang Puak Bus Station

    Chang Puak Bus Station is situated in the southern of Chotana Road. Buses ply two routes to and from Chiangmai with the northern route passing through Mae Rim, Mae Taeng, Chiang Dao, Chaiprakarn, Fang, Mae Ai and Thaton from where passengers can take a long trail boat to Chiangrai.
