About Haikou, China
Haikou is the capital city of Hainan Island, the second largest island in China. It is at the north of Hainan Island, which itself is at the south of China.
It is well served by public transportation system, with connection to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. You can choose between taking the plane, train, bus and boat in and out of Haikou. Within, you can easily find inexpensive three-wheeled bicycle and motorcycle rides for as cheap as RMB2. Taxis (or cabs to some) are easily available and fairly affordable as well as buses.
When you are there, do visit the Wugong Temple, it is a Ming dynasty construction which was build in memory of five officials who were banished to Hainan. Other interesting historical sites to visit would be Qiongtai Academy and Xiuying Battery.
There are quite a number of parks in Haikou too, as well as museums, drop by to understand more about Haikou, Hainan and China as a whole. There is also Lao Jie (or old street), which is not unlike the one in Shanghai. Items available here are generally cheaper than those in Shanghai, and the buildings and architectures are worth paying a visit to.
You would probably be able to find a large variety of food here. Do not settle for that pizza, explore further! Try out the noodles, coconut rice and seafood for its local flavour.
Haikou hotels, while not exactly the cheapest in China, is still fairly affordable. You can find a hotel in Haikou for about RMB190, while the higher end ones are about RMB1,100.
